Paws Up for a Good Cause
The Regina Humane Society Looking Forward to the Future
The Regina Humane Society has been helping the city’s animals and owners for decades, doing amazing things day in and day out. Their current home, an aging building that first went up in the mid-1960s is far past its useful life. “We have had plans for a new facility for over 10 years,” says Bill Thorn, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the Humane Society. “We needed something that was more accessible and designed for today’s standards in animal care.”
The organization worked with Dream Developments on the new location for the facility, and launched a fundraising campaign to see the project come to life. As the end of construction approaches in June 2023, $1.7 million remains to be raised of the $15 million goal in the Almost Home Capital Campaign. “We’re still actively fundraising for our new home,” says Thorn. “It’s been wonderful to see the community come together for the animals.”
The new Humane Society building is located in Harbour Landing on Parliament Avenue, far easier for pet owners, staff and volunteers to reach. When complete, it will be twice the size of the current facility and feature the best in animal care for Regina’s pets. It will include a first-rate veterinary clinic, classrooms for public education, and a healthy, comfortable place for pets waiting for their forever home. “We’re implementing many new features, including plenty of natural light and windows, modern systems for cleaning, and space to engage the community,” says Thorn. “Gone are the days of concrete floors and metal bars.”
The Regina Humane Society depends on the community to help the animals, and they are grateful for the support they have received over the years. “We’re thankful for the donations of time, money and supplies that our community so generously provides,” says Thorn. “Whether you want to donate to the Almost Home Campaign, drop off food and pet supplies, or spend time volunteering with the animals, we’re grateful for all of it.”
