Summer Skincare Advice
When you envision your best Saskatchewan summer, what do you think about? Our hot, windy days spent by the pool or beach? Maybe long walks or outdoor sports? Now envision your skin. What does summer skin mean to you? Is your skin glowing, fresh, smooth, and perfectly hydrated? The truth for the majority of us is that our skin can end up sun or wind burned, dehydrated, showing signs of premature aging, and developing problems occurring from increased sweat production. Here are some tips to have the summer skin you deserve:
• Protect your pretty skin with mineral sun protection, if you are outside, or even if you might be, between the hours of 9 am to 3 pm. This is essential. • Exfoliate your skin with a gentle chemical exfoliator such as glycolic acid or retinol. I like to alternate these days with a day of gentle physical exfoliant such as a mild scrub. • Try to keep your skin cool, this helps with inflammation which can lead to breakdown and breakouts or premature signs of aging.
• Try a sunless summer glow, there are so many amazing self tanners available and the formulations are really incredible and deliver a gorgeous, fake summer tan. • Switch up your moisturizer for something lighter if you will be outdoors and perspiring a lot. Often your sun protection can be enough for the day, especially if you are prone to breakouts or congested skin. • Avoid the peak hours of the sun's damaging rays; this is generally from 10 am to 2 pm. • This is a great time of year to incorporate Vitamin C into your routine, it helps to keep your skin bright. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help protect skin cells from damaging free radicals caused by UV exposure. Be sure to use this ingredient at night as light causes it to be less effective. Keep your skin hydrated from the inside out, and make sure you are drinking enough water. • Keep your shades handy to protect your delicate eye area not only from damage, but also from squinting that can cause those dreaded crowsfeet. • Pack a cooling face or body mist in your bag to help you keep cool and hydrated. • Protect your lips with sun protection also, especially since they haven't been exposed to much lately. If you've ever burned them, you know this is something you want to avoid at all costs.
• Wear protective clothing, like a fabulous hat when you can to offer more protection. • Meet with your skincare provider for a treatment at least once during the summer. They will be able to offer you a plan for your specific skin type. And don’t forget, be sure to schedule your September facial as your follow up.
We hope that this is your summer to kick back and enjoy your time outdoors more than ever before and that your glow would make J. Lo envious. Ultimately, prevention is better than trying to undo summer damage and summer skin that is irresistibly glowing starts in the fall and winter and your esthetician is your skin's best friend.
