Bring your yard to life
Garden Girl has the plants, planters and practical advice to help every gardener grow
Regina’s Garden Girl, Ariel Cote, and her team at 1070 MacDonald Street are helping gardeners create outdoor spaces that are beautiful, useful and full of life. Whether someone has a big backyard, a small patio, a sunny balcony or a brand-new patch of soil, Garden Girl has the plants, tools and friendly advice to make gardening feel easy.
“Gardening can feel overwhelming at first, but it really doesn’t have to be,” Ariel says. “With the right plants, the right tools and a little guidance, anyone can grow something beautiful.”
Grow what comes back
Perennials are a smart place to start. These low-maintenance plants return year after year, adding colour, texture and interest without needing to be replanted every season. Once established, many varieties require minimal watering and fertilization, and their root systems can also help improve soil structure.
“Perennials can make maintaining your yard even easier because they come up every year and spread out,” Ariel says. “There are options for sunny and shady spots, and they can attract pollinators like bees, birds and butterflies.”
Lily, iris, foxglove, liatris, dianthus, yarrow, daylily, bleeding heart and hydrangea are all excellent choices for Saskatchewan gardens. Ariel also encourages gardeners to mix flowers into vegetable gardens to help attract pollinators.
Add structure with shrubs
Shrubs are another beautiful way to bring a yard together. They add height, shape and year-round structure while creating privacy, softening views and helping define outdoor spaces. Many shrubs also provide shelter and food for birds, bees and other beneficial insects.
“Shrubs come in so many sizes, shapes and colours,” Ariel says. “We have a great selection of options for any space, and many are heat and drought tolerant, and rabbit and deer resistant.”
Hydrangeas are especially popular, and Garden Girl has one of the largest selections in Regina. With more than 20 varieties that thrive in Saskatchewan’s Zone 3 climate, these Manitoba-grown beauties are both hardy and showy. Some stay compact at two to three feet, while others grow into bold six- to seven-foot shrubs with dreamy, oversized blooms.
“Hydrangeas are a perfect way to add a wow factor,” Ariel says. “They work in small spaces, big yards and anywhere someone wants something beautiful.”
