Female hair loss and the hormone connection

Female hair loss and the hormone connection

Understanding the causes and finding solutions

For many women, hair is more than just strands—it’s a symbol of beauty, confidence and femininity. That’s why hair loss can be an emotionally devastating experience, leading to stress, anxiety and a dip in self-esteem. What is happening when your hair starts thinning? The answer often lies in hormones.

The role of estrogen and androgens

Female pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia, is the most common form of hair loss in women. It’s influenced by genetics and androgens—a group of hormones present in both men and women. When androgen levels are too high or when hair follicles become overly sensitive to them, the follicles shrink, producing weaker, thinner hair.

Estrogen, on the other hand, helps keep hair in the growth phase longer and protects against the effects of androgens. As estrogen levels decline—especially during menopause—hair follicles weaken, leading to slower regrowth, increased shedding, and thinning at the crown.

Hormonal changes and hair loss

Hormonal shifts at different life stages can impact hair:

• Pregnancy & postpartum: High estrogen levels during pregnancy promote thick hair, but a rapid drop after childbirth can trigger temporary shedding.

• Menopause: Declining estrogen and progesterone slow hair growth and increase shedding, making follicles more sensitive to androgens.

• PCOS: Elevated androgens can cause scalp hair thinning while increasing facial hair growth (hirsutism), often alongside acne and irregular periods.

• Thyroid disorders: Both underactive and overactive thyroid conditions can lead to diffuse hair thinning, but treating the imbalance can help restore hair health.

Finding the right treatment

If you’re experiencing hair loss, early intervention is key. A consultation with a hair loss specialist will give you an accurate diagnosis and include a personalised treatment plan. Options include topical and oral medications, anti-androgen therapies, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), diet and nutrition,  and stress management can all help address hair loss.

Taking action

Hair loss can be complex, but understanding the role of hormones is the first step toward effective treatment. A holistic approach can help women not only restore their hair but also regain confidence and peace of mind.
