How to host the perfect game night at home

As the days grow shorter and the weather turns cooler, many of us spend more time indoors. Instead of reaching for another streaming series or scrolling through social media, families and friends are rediscovering a timeless way to connect: puzzles and board games.

Once considered old-fashioned, puzzles and tabletop games have enjoyed a resurgence in recent years. They're affordable, screen-free and offer something that's becoming increasingly valuable in today's busy world—quality time together.

The return of game night

Board games have evolved far beyond the classic favourites many of us grew up with. While games like Scrabble, Monopoly and Clue still have a place on the shelf, today's options include cooperative games where players work as a team, quick card games that can be learned in minutes and strategy games designed for every age group.

Jigsaw puzzles have also made a comeback. With thousands of designs available, there's something for everyone, from breathtaking landscapes and Canadian wildlife to pop culture themes and works of art. Completing a puzzle offers a satisfying sense of accomplishment while encouraging conversation and collaboration along the way.

Unlike digital entertainment, puzzles and games invite everyone to participate. They encourage problem-solving, creativity and teamwork while providing an opportunity to unplug and simply enjoy each other's company.

Create a cozy atmosphere

Hosting a puzzle or game night doesn't require elaborate planning. In fact, keeping things simple is often the best approach.

Choose a comfortable space with plenty of room around a table and good lighting. Soft blankets, cozy sweaters and a favourite playlist can help create a relaxed atmosphere that encourages guests to settle in for the evening.

Offer a variety of activities if you're hosting a larger group. Set up one table for a jigsaw puzzle and another for board games so guests can move between them throughout the evening.

Keep snacks simple

Finger foods are ideal for game night since they're easy to enjoy without interrupting the fun.

Popcorn, pretzels, vegetables with dip, cheese and crackers or homemade cookies all make excellent choices. Serve drinks with lids if possible to help avoid spills near game boards or puzzle pieces. If you're feeling creative, make the snacks part of the evening by asking each guest to bring a favourite treat to share.

Choose games everyone can enjoy

Think about your guests when selecting games. Families with young children may enjoy classics like Guess Who? or Connect 4, while adults might appreciate word games, trivia or cooperative adventures.

If your group includes players with varying experience levels, choose games that are easy to learn and don't require lengthy explanations. The goal is to spend more time laughing and playing than reading instructions.

For puzzle enthusiasts, consider choosing a 500- or 1,000-piece puzzle that everyone can work on together over the course of the evening.

Make it a tradition

One of the best things about puzzle and game nights is how easily they become a tradition. Whether you host once a month, gather during long weekends or make it part of holiday celebrations, these evenings create opportunities to slow down and reconnect.

This fall, swap screen time for game time. You might be surprised how quickly a simple puzzle or favourite board game becomes the highlight of the season.
