SUB EXPRESS BRINGS THREE GENERATIONS OF FLAVOUR TO EVERY SANDWICH
Regina’s homegrown sandwich shop is expanding with heart, heritage and hefty portions.
In a city full of food options, Sub Express has carved out its own loyal following — and it’s not just about the sandwiches. For owner Yanni Mamais, the shop’s story is rooted in family tradition, local pride and a commitment to doing things right.
“Sub Express started as a family-run venture rooted in Regina, but the story really goes back much further,” says Yanni. “I’m proud to be the third generation in the restaurant business. It all began in the 1960s with my grandpa on my mom’s side.”
That legacy continued when Yanni’s father, Jim Mamais, opened franchise restaurants across Regina in the 1980s. Eventually, Sub Express became the family’s way of bringing something uniquely local to the community. It’s a place that combines quality, speed and soul.
Fresh, fast and made with care
The idea behind Sub Express was simple: hearty, flavourful sandwiches made with fresh ingredients and served fast but without feeling like fast food.
“We wanted something that gave people the best of both worlds: quality ingredients, fast service and local personality,” says Yanni. “Fresh, hearty sandwiches made the way we would serve them at home.”
That commitment shows in the details. Bread is baked fresh daily. Toppings are fully customizable. Sauces are made in-house. And the portions? More than generous.
A menu that speaks for itself
Customer favourites include the ever-popular cheesesteak and the “New Yorker,” packed with bold Italian flavour. For lighter appetites, the donair/gyro bowls and gluten-free options offer something different without skimping on taste.
But one menu item keeps regulars coming back again and again. “Our Mamais Greek Philly steak is a one-of-a-kind hit,” says Yanni.
Whether it’s a classic deli sandwich or a fully loaded creation, every Sub Express order delivers on freshness, flavour and value.
Growing with the community
From day one, Sub Express has built its reputation on more than just what’s on the menu. Local support, community involvement and a genuine passion for connecting with people have fuelled the brand’s growth.
“One of the most memorable moments was opening our second location — seeing the community rally around us really proved how much people were invested in the brand,” says Yanni.
Partnerships with schools, charities and local sports teams have become an essential part of Sub Express’s mission. And with new locations coming soon, there’s no slowing down.
“We’re focused on franchise growth across Saskatchewan and eventually Canada,” says Yanni. “We’re also experimenting with new specials, seasonal sandwiches and more community programs.”
