When scalp hair isn’t enough
How body hair transplants offer new hope for hair restoration
For people with limited scalp donor hair, restoring a full head of hair can feel out of reach. But thanks to body hair transplants (BHT), there’s another option. This innovative technique uses hair from other parts of the body—like the beard, chest or legs—to fill in thinning or balding areas on the scalp.
Where the hair comes from
Body hair transplants use advanced methods like Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) or Direct Hair Implantation (DHI). Individual follicles are taken from areas like the beard, chest, back or legs, then carefully implanted into thinning areas. The beard is often the preferred donor site, as beard hairs are strong and have a high survival rate—up to 90 per cent. Chest, back and leg hair can also be used, though these hairs have slightly lower survival rates and grow more slowly.
Creating a natural look
Blending body hair with existing scalp hair takes a skilled hand. “A natural look depends on using the right mix of hair types,” says Dr. Bea Gerbrands, surgeon at De Haar Hair Restoration. “We often use scalp grafts at the front, then layer in body or beard hair further back to add density.”
What to expect
Most patients experience minimal discomfort, with swelling and redness lasting a week or two. New growth starts around three to four months, with final results visible after 12 to 18 months. Learn more at dehaarhair.ca or call 306.522.2210 for a consultation with Dr. Bea Gerbrands.
