WHY REFINISHING IS A SMART, SAFE CHOICE FOR YOUR FLOORS

WHY REFINISHING IS A SMART, SAFE CHOICE FOR YOUR FLOORS

Worried that refinishing your hardwood floors will leave your home dusty and smelly for days? You’re not alone—but the reality is much more reassuring.

Dust-free and low- odour technology
Modern sanding equipment has come a long way. “Our sanders are connected to vacuums that collect 99.8 per cent of the dust created during the sanding process,” says Greg Dozorec, co-owner at Wascana Wood Floors. “That means there’s virtually no dust left behind.” As for strong chemical smells, the finishes used are all low-VOC. Any residual odour typically clears within 24 to 48 hours.

Options for dark floors
If you have dark-coloured hardwood and are unsure about how refinishing will work, you have plenty of choices. “We offer 37 traditional stain colours, 57 penetrating oil colours and a wide range of finishes,” says Greg. For added texture and character, wire brushing is available on site for oak, ash and hickory floors.

Refinishing vs replacing
Think it’s cheaper to rip everything out and start fresh? Not necessarily. “Once you factor in the cost of removal, subfloor repairs, new materials and installation, replacing your floors can end up costing more than double,” says Greg. Refinishing makes use of what’s already there, saving money and reducing environmental impact.

Why hardwood beats vinyl in the long run
Vinyl plank flooring is often marketed as scratch-proof and waterproof, making it popular with families. But unlike hardwood, it can’t be restored. “Vinyl often contains phthalates, lead and cadmium, which release into the air over time,” says Greg. These chemicals have been linked to respiratory, developmental and reproductive issues—and many landfills are now refusing to accept them.

Refinishing your hardwood floors keeps them looking beautiful, is more environmentally responsible and creates a safer home for your family. Learn more about hardwood floors at wascana-wood-floors.ca or call 306.559.4443.
